Frequency shifting for acoustic feedback reduction
نویسنده
چکیده
Acoustic feedback is a well-known phenomenon in any electro-acoustical real-time system. Whenever the loop gain of a system exceeds 1 for any frequencies, the system becomes unstable: Feeding the amplified sound signal back into the microphone causes a penetrating whistle. Among others, one concept to reduce acoustic feedback is frequency shifting. The implementation of a frequency shifter is easy by using analog circuits, but quite demanding for digital real-time applications like digital audio mixers. This paper describes the theoretical background and our realtime implementation on a TI TMS320C5416. We used the complex FIR filter approach for analytic signal generation in order to ensure equal amplitude response and constant group delay in the real and imaginary signal path. At a sampling frequency of fS = 24 kHz we got satisfactory results with a group delay of about 10 ms which is short enough for real-time systems.

Acoustic feedback is capable of driving an electroacoustic amplification system unstable. Inserting a frequency shifter into the feedback loop can increase the maximum stable gain before instability. In this paper, we explain how frequency shifting can effectively smooth out the feedback loop magnitude response, and how this relates to the system stability. Then we describe measurements on real...

This study evaluates the impact of underwater ambient noise using seven real noise samples; Dolphin, Rain, Ferry, Sonar, Bubbles, Lightning, and Outboard Motor in three frequency ranges in extremely low frequency (ELF) band. The ELF band is the most significant bandwidth for underwater long-range communication. ELF band which is extended from 3 to 3000 Hz clearly, faces bandwidth limitation. Me...

Studies of speech sensorimotor learning often manipulate auditory feedback by modifying isolated acoustic parameters such as formant frequency or fundamental frequency using near real-time resynthesis of a participant's speech. An alternative approach is to engage a participant in a total remapping of the sensorimotor working space using a virtual vocal tract. To support this approach for study...
متن کاملA Feedforward Active Noise Control System for Ducts Using a Passive Silencer to Reduce Acoustic Feedback
Ventilation systems installed in buildings usually generate low-frequency noise because the passive silencers commonly used to attenuate the ventilation noise are not effective in the lowfrequency range. A method proven to effectively reduce low-frequency noise in a wide variety of applications is active noise control (ANC). A feedforward ANC system applied to duct noise normally uses a referen...

This is the second part of a review on the challenges and recent developments in hearing aids. Feedback and the occlusion effect pose great challenges in hearing aid design and usage. Yet, conventional solutions to feedback and the occlusion effect often create a dilemma: the solution to one often leads to the other. This review discusses the advanced signal processing strategies to reduce feed...
